This blog is dedicated to decarceration in Australia. Our incarceration rates are very high, but we have nothing to show for this exorbitant expense. The evidence shows that locking people up does little to deter people from committing crime. In fact, imprisonment harms the chances of people being rehabilitated. There are alternatives that really work. Restorative justice can achieve healing for both victim and offender with community-based solutions. Justice reinvestment can redirect funds from correctional services and other law enforcement to social initiatives that provide opportunities to those who would otherwise enter or return to prison. Fractured families and communities can be strengthened by these alternatives, reversing the downward spiral into prison. This blog advocates for depopulating prisons and investing in keeping people out of prison.
